New to Printed Matter’s Catalog, two NYC artist journals from the late 70s-early 80s, Cover and Performance Art Journal / Live. Together, the two publications offer a cross-media dispatch from the city’s avant-garde scenes of the time.

Live (published by Performing Arts Journal and previously titled Performance Art) was a New York City-based arts magazine established in 1979 and edited by Bonnie Marranca and Gautam Dasgupta. In addition to in depth coverage of visual arts, Live includes artist writings, interviews, dialogues, and documentation, making it an indispensable record of the NYC’s intertwined artistic disciplines.

Cover, edited by Judith Aminoff, was published in NYC in the late 1970s and early 1980s. The magazine focused on giving space for artists to write about their own artworks, juxtaposing visual documentation and artist writing.
