Printed Matter is very pleased to publish a number of new publications and editions this month!
Emerging Artists Publication Series
-Sara Cwynar’s Pictures of Pictures is a taxonomy of images showing photographs from discarded printed matter, including camera advertisements, “how-to” darkroom manuals, and instructional booklets for film cameras, paired with their original accompanying text.
-Clive Murphy and Aengus Woods’ Demonic Interventions with Ikea Furniture takes the contemporary convention of the self-assembly manual as its point of departure, offering a wry strategy for unlocking the latent primal forces and cultural histories embedded deep within the most unassuming of objects.
-Chris Nosenzo’s Lost Art is a catalog of post-modern artworks that have suffered a material destruction, displacement, or disappearance. Conceived as a print archive, the book collects the documents and remains of 25 lost works, all of which are in fact forged by Nosenzo.
-Max Stolkin’s Versions is a concise treatment of infinite regress, pairing Hubble telescope deep-field imagery with images of modernist stacking tables and several versions of the same story.
Other New Publications
-Non Stop Poetry: The Zines of Mark Gonzales is an artists’ catalog exploring the prolific zine-making of pro skateboarder Mark Gonzales.
-Proposals for Printed Matter, Inc by Peter Liversidge is a series of typewritten proposals from the artist in the fluxus tradition.
-We also co-published a zine set with 8-ball Zines, featuring the newly-created work from Tom Sachs, Ari Marcopoulos, Mark Gonzales, and Weirdo Dave.
Fundraising Editions
For this year’s NY Art Book Fair we debuted three three new limited-edition artworks by Jonathan Horowitz, Dorothy Iannone and Sara Cwynar (now sold out) available at the Printed Matter booth. Purchase of these editions support the Fair, helping to ensure that the event remains free.
Imagine There’s no Israel, There’s no Palestine is a four-color silkscreen by Jonathan Horowitz, bringing the Israeli and Palestinian flags together into a single graphic, overlaid with the word “imagine,” and accompanied by Horowitz’s alternative lyrics. Invoking the sentiment of John Lennon’s Imagine, expressing the utopian sentiment of a world without geopolitical borders and national identity, Horowitz also references the fact that some on both sides of the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict refuse to acknowledge the existence of the other.
Doesn’t Everyone Make Mistakes in September, 1976, is a brand new white silkscreen print on black museum board by Dorothy Iannone. On occasion of the exhibition of Iannone’s artist’s books in the Dome at Printed Matter’s NY Art Book Fair 2014, this image, created originally as a post card issued in 1976, is released, as a limited edition larger-format print, the original of which is also on display within the exhibition.
