Treyf Books by Winnipeg-based artist Rob Kovitz are unusual books of an indeterminate type, close to “montage novels”. The self-published books use texts and images compiled from various sources, usually obsessively related to one or more themes, and then recombined through a process of highly subjective editing, ordering and juxtaposition.
His most recent title According to Plan is a super-cut montage bookwork with an interest in the word “plan” (each text selection includes the word). The result is a funny, disquieting, and thought-provoking exploration of the human obsession with making plans.
Since 1992, Kovitz has published six book projects including Pig City Model Farm (with Princeton Architectural Press, 1992), Room Behavior (with Insomniac Press, 1997), and Ice Fishing in Gimli, an 8-volume, 4750 page appropriation epic that was ten years in the making (Treyf Books, 2009). He lives in Winnipeg, Canada where he also teaches cultural history at the University of Manitoba Faculty of Architecture.
