Coco Gordon (aka ‘SuperSkyWoman’) began as a paper-maker and independent publisher, going on to become a prolific book artist who made hundreds of unique works as well as several dozen editioned publications. Her books are largely produced with the manipulation of a photocopier, dense with images, poetry, and other text. As objects they feel thoroughly worked-over, often incorporating a range of materials at all once; various paper stocks (including hand-made sheets), assorted acetates, tipped-in photos, dyed linen yarn, ironed-on photo transfers and spontaneous elements like “surprise inserts” which vary throughout the edition. The resulting work is something that is both deliberately rendered, but chaotic and overgrown. As book artist Richard Kostelanetz has said of her publishing, she takes “total responsibility.” Gordon’s work as an artist and poet is often tied closely to her committed interest in ‘permaculture,’ an outlook by which ecological & ecosocial concerns (sustainable architecture, food-shed, regional policy) bear on how humans should live with the longterm health of the planet in mind. Inherently political, many of these publications revolve around the fraught relationship society shares with the land it uses. One work serves a manual for considering the “ills of this our blip culture”, and comes fastened to a small tree-branch and bound with twine. Her audio work ‘Hip-Hop Solarplexus’ brings together a collection of sounds of farmers, workers, and land. The intricate and impassioned works ask to be read with the eyes, as well as the “mind and body.”
