Diseases of Consciousness is a catalog of ten mental illnesses that have not been recognized by medical science, but that exist nonetheless. Perhaps the reader will recognize Psycho-Congestion, Overactive Rational Gland, or Hardening of the Categories as familiar, modern day plagues. The book is divided into chapters that name the disease in red and provide an illustration of a typical sufferer on a facing folded page. This page opens out to display a subjective and objective description of the disease, an assessment of a given case and a treatment plan. A passage of text on a facing page gives a more detailed and often poetic portrayal of symptoms. The book is bound in white canvas with straightjacket ties to keep it closed.
