Cardiff’s latest work in collaboration with George Bures Miller appeared at this year’s Venice Biennale. For this project the artists constructed an elaborate 17-seat screening room, complete with velvet chairs and carpeting. Using architectural modeling that manipulates perspective, Cardiff and Miller created the illusion of the interior of a full-sized traditional movie theater.
This lush volume documents the 10-minute digital video which was shown, and includes the screenplay typeset over the video stills, as well as several essays and reproductions of the installation. A dark narrative featuring a nurse, a patient, and a doctor involved in some unknown conspiratorial plot unfolds, builds to a crescendo, and then…
From its burgundy velvet cover to the dramatic lighting and deep hues of the video stills, to the fast pace and ambiguity of the text, this book fully draws in the reader/viewer, creating a multi-layered sensory experience. A seductive introduction to Cardiff’s work.
