Feeling that women were acutely objectified as objects of beauty and pleasure within the male canon and perspective of the arts, artist Alexis Hunter chose to approach her work from the opposite perspective, photographing women in positions of power and control. Radical Feminism in the 1970s is comprised of Hunter’s most well-known and celebrated suite of images. “The Model’s Revenge” is a series composed of several images telling stories of pain and violence, while at the same time identifying with aggressors and demystifying taboos. “Approach to Fear” addresses women’s sexuality with images of Hunter’s tired feet, bloody from walking in sexy, platform shoes and “Dialogue with a Rapist”, a moving piece, outlines a fictional exchange between a female victim and her attacker. Contributing authors include Lucy R. Lippard and John Roberts. Edited by Lynda Morris.
