“If you can respect a stone, you can respect another human being, you have to know why. And that was about it, but as far as we have societies built on an xx and an xy structure, something I’ve been fighting most of my life because I don’t get it.”
Lawrence Weiner, Bomb Magazine, May 2010
Nine wooden blocks designed by Lawrence Weiner that, when arranged or stacked, create different variations on a equation that proposes a visual deconstruction of the X and Y chromosomes that typically assign gender to through the combinations XX and XY. This artist multiple was created through a collaboration between Weiner, Yvon Lambert Gallery (Paris, France) and Third Drawer Down (Victoria, Australia).
