This hefty mixed-genre nonfiction work is a loose portrait of Anne-Marie Levine illustrated by photographs, newspaper clippings, emails, letters, original text, and tidbits she’s collected along her journey. This scrapbook traces her background and birth in Belgium, adolescence in Los Angeles, and prolific pursuits in New York. These portions of her life, referred to as volumes 1–5, can be found in two earlier incarnations of this project published in 2011. The original volumes are included here with seven new subsequent chapters. These latter sections are conceptual rather than chronological, offering intimate insight into themes such as “Being a Woman” and “Friends.” Obscure memories are sculpted into narrative through public and private artifacts. Quotations and highlighted segments are littered throughout the book. Notes and lists, in addition to a generous appendix and list of sources, reveal the depth of her thought process. A dynamo shape-shifter, Levine also shares curiosities that influenced her varied creative ventures. Part diary and part archive, Recular Pour Mieux Sauter is an evaluation of personal souvenirs in hindsight.
