Berlin-based artist Lily Friedeberg asserts every illustrator or designer has a collection of objects dear to them. The purpose need not be anything other than a fondness. It is the relationship one forms with an object, perhaps upon first glance and for very little reason, that makes it so significant.
For Friedeberg, her collection is made up of small figurines, erring on the side of weird, cute, and above all, inspiring. Alongside photographs of each figurine or inspiration, she features the illustration she has created, as well as the location where the item was bought, its size, brand and country/region of manufacture. Toys is as informative as it is sentimental, reminding us that objects are rarely ever just one-dimensional.
