This publication contains a multi-tier statement from The Combahee River Collective, a collective of Black lesbian women whose purpose in meeting since 1974 has been to challenge and indignity the classist, racist, and sexist practices that are experienced on a ubiquitous level by women who share their marginalized place in contemporary society.
In their own words: “The most general statement of our politics at the current time would be that we are actively committed to struggling against racial, sexual, heterosexual, and class oppression, and see as our particular task the development of integrated analysis and practice based upon the fact that the major systems of oppression are interlocking.”
Separated conveniently into four sections: an introduction to the genesis of Black feminism, a statement of beliefs, problems implicit in organizing the collective, and current Black feminist issues and practice, The Combahee River Collective Statement expertly presents information and experiential knowledge that provides a necessary perspective in the discourse surrounding the reliance of disenfranchised citizens on their own identity as a source of political change to evoke a cultural liberation.
