In Eugene Terry’s inaugural children’s publication, Tuesday, we follow Duck’s journey to a big city, in search of a snack. With delicate colored pencil illustrations rendered in subtle tones, Terry tells a simple story of adventure and friendship. The direct writing is paired with intricate imagery in which details are revealed with every read: an alligator peeking its head out of a sewer grate; the price of a swiss cheese sandwich at the deli; a man watching television through an apartment building’s window.
Tuesday is the perfect picture book for a child beginning to identify objects and imagery with language. The minimal text gives liberty to the children to fill in spaces with their own imaginary thoughts. Each page of the book invites the reader to join in Duck’s journey by adding to and collaborating with the storyline. -Publisher
