“All art comes from other art.” – Ed Ruscha Ruscha’s artists’ books have had a profound influence on generations of artists, photographers and book makers. His aforementioned use of commercial printing techniques opened the book-as-artform to the possibilities of mass production and distribution, while also contributing to the broader art world discourse on commerciality and the boundaries of art as a discrete category. Taking various forms—from homages and parodies, to reinterpretations and appropriations—a vast number of contemporary artists’ books have been directly inspired by Ruscha’s own titles, with more produced each year. As artist (and frequent Ruscha-copier) Michalis Pichler has written, “by now the appropriation and paraphrasing of Ed Ruscha constitutes a genre of its own.” Printed Matter’s table, Various Homages to Ed Ruscha, collects seventeen of these Ruscha-inspired works here.
