Artist Jonathan Lyndon Chase sits down with designer Jerome Harris and poet jamal rashad to discuss Jonathan’s latest book of experimental narratives: wild wild Wild West & Haunting of the Seahorse; as well as the themes that surface: complex histories of Blackness, meditations on mental health, and Black queer futurity through the lens of science fiction, fantasy, and horror.

wild wild Wild West / Haunting of the Seahorse by Jonathan Lyndon Chase, published by Capricious, is a dual sided publication of non-linear storytelling that illustrates black queer bodies moving through fluid states of love, grief, and desire. In the first book, wild wild Wild West, Chase tenderly sits with the passing of their late grandmother, paying tribute through their shared love of Black cowboys, while also grappling with their grief and understanding of self, queer community, and desire. Set within the gardens of a space station, the second book, Haunting of the Seahorse, explores being in love, desires to have a baby, and the great lengths one will go to protect these things. Outer space, luscious gardens, fight scenes, and intimate depictions of parenthood and romance intertwine to tell this complex and beautiful story.

Jonathan Lyndon Chase is an interdisciplinary artist principally working in modes of painting, video and sculpture depicting queer black love and community amid the backdrop of city streets and domestic spaces. This is their second book with Capricious Publishing—a debut book Quiet Storm was released in conjunction with Company Gallery in 2018. Chase was born in 1989 in Philadelphia, PA where they currently live and work.

Jerome Harris is a graphic designer, educator, writer, and curator. He holds an MFA from Yale University and a BA from Temple University. Harris is currently the Design Director at Housing Works.

jamal rashad is an optimist when careful, a massage therapist, and poet. He is an incoming MFA candidate at American University for poetry and creative writing as well as a recipient of a fellowship from The Watering Hole Poetry. His work has been featured in Cafe Con Leche, Radar Productions, and Argot Magazine. He is the curator of the Black, Queer reading series “Black Beans". jamal uses motifs of horror and blues to interrogate the intersections of Black Queer identity. His most recent project, “Imagoes: A Queer Anthology” (LP&P) was published in July 2019.
