Thirteen Years: The materialization of ideas/Trece años: la materialización de ideas is the first monograph focused on the practice of artist/author Michalis Pichler, featuring eleven critical essays, an extensively illustrated catalogue, a conversation with John Stezaker, and selected writings by the artist. This version of the work follows the 2015 edition, and includes a new dust-jacket and Spanish translation in an accompanying 28 p booklet.

The book traces Pichler´s invention of RECTO-VERSO-COLLAGES, objet perdu and delivers a solid introduction into appropriation, conceptual poetics and Bibliophagia. The catalogue is richly illustrated and features numerous bookworks, photography series, book objects, collages and paintings that employ the canvas as page for an artwork. Critical essays include those from Tobias Amslinger, Matthias Bleyl, Eleanor Brown, Craig Dworkin, Annette Gilbert, Mark Gisbourne, Patrick Greaney, Jean-Claude Moineau, Ariane Müller, Stefan Ripplinger and Magnus Wieland.

The book includes certain elements that qualify as Primary Information, PAGE PIECES, in particular PAGINATION PIECES, FACING PIECES and RECTO-VERSO-PIECES, making it a hybrid between catalogue and artists´ book/bookwork. Its longish subtitle is derived from a Lucy-Lippard-publication:

Thirteen Years: The materialization of ideas 2002-2015: A cross-reference book of information on aesthetic boundaries, consisting of a bibliography into which inserted text, critical essays, art works, and documents, are arranged chronologically and focused on a selection of so-called »greatest hits« and conceptual poetics. It contains mentions of such vaguely designated areas as appropriation, bibliophagia, postnaive, unboring boring, détournement, object perdu, and erasure poetry — or writing through — as they currently occur (with occasional political overtones) in the work of Michalis Pichler, edited by Annette Gilbert and Clemens Krümmel.

A special edition of 26 numbered copies (A-Z) features a flying butterfly on pp. 198-199, made into an assisted readymade by a surgical intervention.

Artist Bio
Michalis Pichler is a Berlin-based artist, operating independently from the commercial gallery system, and a founder and organizer of the art book fair Miss Read and Conceptual Poetics Day. Pichler’s works often make strategic use of found and pre-used material, including sources derived from image, object, sound, text, or thought. Many of them can be located on either side of the imaginary border between visual art and literature.

He both uses pages as canvases and canvases as pages for art works. In 2019 Pichler edited Publishing Manifestos, which Max Schumann called a “meta-artists’ book in its own right: indispensable reading for radical artists´ publishing practice.“

Biografía del artista
Michalis Pichler es una artista con residencia en Berlín, que trabaja independientemente del sistema de galerías comerciales, y fundador y organizador de la feria de libros de arte Miss Read y Conceptual Poetics Day. Las obras de Pichler a menudo hacen un uso estratégico de material encontrado y usado previamente, incluidas fuentes derivadas de imágenes, objetos, sonidos, textos o pensamientos.
