Printed Matter / St Marks is delighted to present a window display of riso-printed photobooks—a unique collection crafted by artists at Penumbra Foundation’s Risography studio.

Photobooks transcend mere collections of images, offering carefully curated sequences that weave together overarching themes or narratives. They invite viewers into an immersive experience where storytelling and visual artistry converge. Each book in this exhibition holds special significance, having been printed by the artists themselves. These works represent the culmination of both visiting artists and residents of Penumbra’s Risography Residency program, who have refined their techniques during their stay.

Risography, the printing technique behind these books, combines elements of screen printing and photocopying. Since its invention in the mid 1980s, the Risograph has been known for its limitations in multi-color printing and the absence of the CMYK process. These constraints transform each printing project into a dynamic process of creative negotiation, often leading to serendipitous discoveries and unexpected outcomes. The photobooks on display are not only artistic expressions but also tangible records of the collaborative and experimental nature that defines the essence of Risography.

The display is a collaboration between Printed Matter / St Marks and Penumbra Foundation and is presented on occasion of Press Print: Risograph Photobooks, an exhibition of contemporary Risograph publications from around the world, on view at the Penumbra Foundation through November 1, 2024.

Printed Matter / St Marks is also excited to announce a panel discussion and pop-up riso store on September 4 from 6–8pm This event has been postponed at Penumbra. This event marks a further joint effort between Printed Matter / St Marks and Penumbra Foundation to celebrate and explore the world of Risography.
