This issue of Martha’s Quarterly explores the implications of deep observation, from drawing to Grand Central Terminal to where country borders are drawn to lunar ISRU (in-situ resource utilization). Emmy Catedral’s writing and photographic series introduces us to the painted ceiling at Grand Central Terminal, which features an incorrect depiction of the stars, and constellations of her own design; Meena Hasan’s essay and painting explore questions of observation and examples where systems and edges seem arbitrary yet are deeply consequential; and Altynay Demeubayeva walks us through some aspects of in-situ resource utilization, i.e. the practice of generating products using lunar materials to support life on the moon.
